Patient Support Groups

A support group is a collective of people sharing common interests and experiences, in this case, people with a lung cancer and their carers/families. It provides an environment to share information, support one another and discuss ways to cope with the challenges of living with lung cancer.

What do Support Groups do?

Support groups offer a welcoming, informal environment and the opportunity to participate in many different types of activities, which may include:

  • regular meetings
  • possible guest speakers providing information on a range of topics
  • education and information days
  • member to member support (through telephone calls, emails, on line forums and hospital and home visits)
  • group newsletters

There are many benefits to being part of a support group including:

  • An opportunity to connect with other people living with lung cancer
  • An opportunity to be supported and to help others
  • Professional advice and support from skilled facilitators
  • A chance to talk about your concerns, share experiences and information
  • Develop new skills for looking after yourself and coping with day-to-day life
  • Feeling less isolated by being connected with a group
