The tree planting was held at River Hills in Brisbane. The event was made more poignant with the sad news that Melbourne patient advocate, Matthew Pusey, had passed away that morning. Matt's friends, many of whom he had met via the Lungevity on line patient forum (www.lungevity.com.au), planted rows of trees as a living tribute to a generous young man who had strived to raise awareness of the need for more lung cancer patient support and lung nurses. Guests included Kylie Johnston's widower Nick and her parents, Ian and Sandra Schofer, who helped unveil a commemorative plaque on the planting site at Riverpoint Boulevard Park. Nick's wife Kylie was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 27 and despite a courageous journey with lung cancer passed away on Lung Cancer Awareness Day in 2007. The Australian Lung Foundation's CEO, William Darbishire, donned his gardening gear and joined lung cancer patients and family members, lung specialists, nurses and allied health professionals, Brisbane City Council and community volunteers in searing Queensland heat to plant a hillside of native trees. "This event is an important recognition that in Queensland , lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in both men and women. Many of the people here today will have lost a loved one to lung cancer," Mr William Darbishire acknowledged.
