What is it?
It's a lunch to help us raise funds for lung cancer.
The idea for a fundraising lunch came from one of our patients. Sydney supporter, Roslyn Hogan, celebrated her 60th birthday in March 2007 with a lunch party to thank all her friends for their encouragement and support with her fight against lung cancer. She stated that her..
"source of inspiration came from Kylie Johnston. She was out there talking about lung cancer, making a difference, making people aware. As a result of Kylie and her husband Nicks' fantastic efforts to raise funds for lung cancer, I am planning a fundraising day for lung cancer research.
I will be 60 on 12th March 2007, and I will be having a huge celebration under a marquee, inviting everyone I know to share this special day with me. I ask for no presents, but a donation for lung cancer (Lungevity Stories, 2006)."
So that's how our 'Lunch for Lung Cancer' came about. It is a 'design your own lunch' - that's the fun of it - you can do lunch how you like it.
Lunch for Lung Cancer is a simple but effective way to raise funds for lung cancer. It's easy - only three things to do.
How do I organise my lunch?
It's as easy as . . .
- Register for your Lunch Kit
- Think of a venue. You could have a picnic in the park, a Friday lunch at the pub, Sunday lunch on the deck, take a boat out on the harbour, or go to the beach for a Barbie or maybe a night out at a restaurant - it is your choice.
- Invite friends, family, acquaintances, workmates, neighbours and others. You can use our invitation template found on the Lung Cancer Support Resources page.
We will do the rest and provide you with posters, pens and lung cancer ribbons to sell, donation envelopes, information about how funds raised through the Kylie Johnston Lung Cancer Network will be used.!
It doesn't matter how much money you raise, as every little bit counts. Thank you.
Some Good Reasons to Help us Raise Funds
With monies raised from this campaign, we will..
- provide funds to develop and sustain lung cancer patient support initiiatives including our Telephone Support Groups and the services of our Lung Care Nurse.
- provide information and support resources for the more than 9700 Australians diagnosed with lung cancer each year.
The lunches also help to create greater awareness of lung cancer, which takes the lives of more than 7600 Australians every year, and affects thousands more as it touches families, friends and work mates.
Survival rates for lung cancer patients are extremely poor; in fact it is the leading cause of cancer death with less than 15% of people surviving for 5 years. The Kylie Johnston Lung Cancer Network wants to be able to offer all Australians support - no-one deserves lung cancer, but they do deserve support, hope and understanding. Lung cancer doesn't discriminate - it affects men and women of all ages, smokers and non-smokers.
Please help us to take the first small steps in giving lung cancer a face.
When to have a Lunch?
As we said, Lunch for Lung Cancer is very flexible. You can have a lunch any time that you like. We are launching 'Lunch for Lung Cancer' in November as it is Lung Cancer Awareness Month all around the world. We suspect that people might want to have a lunch or raise funds at other times of the year, when they would like to remember a loved one, and celebrate a birthday, an anniversary or another special time in the calendar year.
